It’s easy to get lost in all the holiday prep this time of
year, and sometimes we forget to actually celebrate. We’re too busy shopping
for presents, decorating the house, etc. to take a minute and remember that
there is still fun to be had before Christmas hits. Anyone feel me on this?
Well, this year I found some fun holiday-themed activities to do before Santa
gets here! Some are family-friendly, and some are for the more booze-enthused
;) Whatever you're looking for, here are 7 holiday-themed events and activities to add to your calendar this
year:
Hanukkahon Ice (Dec. 9) — Dig out your ice skates (or just rent a pair) and
visit Brenton Skating Plaza in downtown Des Moines to celebrate Hanukkah with
treats and ice-skating.
Jingle in theJunction (Dec. 10) — The Historic Valley Junction stores stay open late
from 5-9 p.m. on select nights leading up to Christmas, and this is your last
chance to catch the specials, window displays and entertainment. Expect a
petting zoo, horse-drawn trolley rides and live ice carvings.
Santa Pub Crawl
(Dec. 12) — If the holidays just aren’t the holidays without a little booze,
you can register for the annual Santa Pub Crawl, which goes through bars in
downtown Des Moines and West Des Moines and includes drink specials. Don’t
forget to dress up in your best holiday garb!
TheNutcracker (Dec. 12-13) — One of my personal favorite Christmastime
traditions, the Nutcracker is a fabulous display of local talent. There are a
few different shows around the area, including one in Ames that my sister
and mom and I usually go to.
MannheimSteamroller (Dec. 15) — This show comes around each year to bring a
one-of-a-kind holiday show that’s perfect for families. It’s the 31st
year of the tour, and it’ll be in Ames for just one night.
NightmareBefore Christmas Party (Dec. 19) — Don your best Christmas costume and
head out to Mickey’s Irish Pub in Waukee for the second annual Nightmare Before
Christmas Party. A live band will play, prizes will be awarded for the most
holiday spirit and free samples of Crown Apple will be available.
JollyHoliday Lights (through Jan. 1) — For just $10 per car, you can drive
through 3.5 miles of holiday light displays. It’s a fun way to spend the night
with friends or family and a great way to support the Make A Wish Foundation.
