Florida packing list

what's going in my bag for a summer trip to Florida

As I mentioned last week, I'm heading to Florida on Thursday to help my mom settle in at the new house (and to get some much-needed sun time on the beach — obvs). My mom and sister and I are driving down with the rest of their belongings (and two little dogs!) and my sister and I will be flying back. Since the car will be jam packed with home stuff, luggage, two dogs and three humans, packing light is definitely a necessity. I thought I'd share a few of the things I'll be bringing with me in case any of you are looking for packing inspiration for your next vacay!

Transitional pieces are going to be the name of the game for this trip. This gray dress is so cute and casual, and easily doubles as a day dress or a swimsuit coverup. I'll be packing several similar dresses that can transition easy from day to night, especially lightweight ones to survive the heat.

Obviously, this trip is going to be a bittersweet one — I'm already dreading the drive to the airport — but right now I'm just looking at this as my first vacation in far too long, an amazing beach getaway, and some excellent girl time. Hope you're all having a great week, babes!

wish list: statement earrings

Brighten up your summer look with these statement earrings

It seems like every year I get caught up in one accessory and go all out with it, and this year statement earrings are stealing my heart. I love how much flare they can add to even the simplest outfits. Adding a small pop of bright color to a neutral ensemble can be just enough to transform it into something fun and fresh. I've been lusting over bright, bold earrings for weeks now (you may have seen these and these on my Instagram!) and I just added these yellow beauties from H&M to my collection — for only $10!

Keeping today's post short and sweet because I may have stayed up too late catching up on Dancing With The Stars and playing with my mom's dogs ;) The weather has been rainy and humid most of the week, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll stay sunny for the whole day today! Hope you all have a good one!

wish list: dress fever

12 easy dresses to elevate your summer wardrobe

Happy Tuesday, babes! How's your week going so far? I'm incredibly excited because my mom's best friend is flying in from California tomorrow, and we always have so much fun when she's here! We're planning a girls night, dinner and drinks, a day trip, and lots of other fun stuff over the next few days.

In other news, my shopping lately has developed something of a pattern. When warm weather hits, it's almost impossible to find me wearing jeans because I am ALL about the dresses. Adam says I have dress fever, and I can't argue with that! I may or may not have purchased five of them in the last two weeks...oops! ;)

These are some styles I found and love, but the two styles I can't get enough of this year are shift and swing dresses. I typically lean more toward fitted cuts or A-line skirts, but for some reason I'm really loving the flirty feel of loose dresses. I just got this one in purple (and love it) and I'm considering ordering this one now, too. There's no such thing as too many dresses, right?

White leather is the perfect amount of edgy and fun

Happy Thursday babes! First, I want to thank all of you for letting me dive off an emotional cliff yesterday. It took me a while to take that post live, but it turned out to be incredibly therapeutic and I'm so happy I shared it with all of you.

Now let's get back to some regular content, shall we? This white (faux) leather jacket is the best purchase I've made lately. I've been wearing it nonstop because it goes with everything and it's the perfect edgy-but-girly jacket for summer. Don't get me wrong, I love a classic black leather jacket, but once spring hits, I'm all about bright colors and light shades — which makes a white moto jacket the perfect accessory.

I styled the jacket with a simple black wrap shirt and snake skin heels, a classic but casual outfit that's perfect for date night or just going out. I don't wear stilettos often, but every once in a while I love a good statement shoe like these. I'm a big believer that every girl should own at least one pair of pumps that make her feel like she's walking a runway every time she wears them, and these certainly do that. Pair them with this white leather, and I feel unstoppable.

transitional spring fashion

I should just title this post "Mom Style," because that's what everyone keeps calling this dress and these sandals... But I don't care because I love them both! I found them (and the sweater) unexpectedly while I went with a friend to check out the 40% off sale at Old Navy last weekend. Talk about a great deal! This linen dress is so pretty and perfect for spring/summer, and I can't explain my current obsession with flats like these ones. And for less than $15, can you blame me?

I'm planning to wear this outfit for Easter Sunday since it's supposed to be a little chilly here in Iowa, but also it's the perfect dress for a spring picnic or an afternoon by the lake, don't you think? Old Navy is still offering up to 40% off women's dresses, in case you're still looking for a good one to wear this weekend. I also shared two similar linen dresses that I love in my newsletter yesterday — if you're not getting it, sign up here!

warm-weather necessity: wedges

8 wedges to step into summer

1. G by Guess  2. BP 3. Michael Kors 4. BCBG 5. Dolce Vita 6. Steve Madden 7. Jeffrey Campbell 8. Guess

There are so many reasons to look forward to summer, but one at the top of my list this year is wearing wedges. If you've been following miscelenious for a while, you might recall my little surgery last year, which prevented me from wearing heels for the majority of the summer (and most other types of shoes, sadly). So, this summer I am so ready and excited to wear cute new wedges! I want to invest in a really nice pair that will last a long time and go with everything... Maybe these adorable Jeffrey Campbell cutout wedges? Or the Michael Kors espadrilles with a nautical vibe? All of these pairs would be so versatile and fun for summertime!

Which wedges are your favorites? And what are you looking forward to wearing most this summer?

Instagram roundup No. 13

Too Faced Shadow Insurance and Naked Dolly lipstick

Happy Tuesday, friends! Sorry for being a little MIA last week, but between a(nother) cold and some blah feelings, I felt it was time for an unanticipated tech detox. But I'm back with another little Instagram roundup to get things going here again! First up: two beauty products I'm currently obsessed with. I bought this Too Faced eye shadow primer on a friend's recommendation, and I don't think I'll ever use anything else! And this Naked Dolly Too Faced lipstick had been on my wish list for a while, and I finally splurged. I need to get a good lip liner for it, but the color is beautiful!

spring wish list

Muted neutrals and electric brights for spring 2016.

I have to say, this might be my favorite wish list yet. I am so ready for spring and all the pastels and colors that go along with it. Fall has come and gone, and winter is taking too long... I'm ready to move on to blushes and nudes, textures and airy fabrics, and bright summery nail colors. I've been wearing a lot of muted colors like blush and beige, especially in my makeup (nude lipstick, anyone?), and I'm excited to transition them into spring for a fresh feminine style.

Some of my top favorites on this list include the pink mirrored sunnies, the rose gold watch (only $20!) and this white moto jacket from the Cupcakes and Cashmere collection. I love the juxtaposition of a leather jacket for spring. Pair it with a printed sundress and you've got yourself a match made in sartorial heaven.

What's on your shopping list this spring? Do you prefer muted neutrals and pastels or bolder brights?

from the office to happy hour: 3 easy outfits

Gearing up to head into work is a task and artform all of its own. There is a delicate line between what is appropriate and what is not. Especially in an office (or similar) setting, you’ve got to be careful about showing too much skin or dressing too casually. All of these “rules,” though, actually provide the perfect opportunity to get creative with what you wear — finding “loopholes,” if you will! Boundaries simply inspire creativity. Also, you’ve probably got more plans than "wake up, go to work, and come home." Instead, you’ve got happy hour catch-ups penciled in and quick dinner dates with friends or a significant other. And in a lot of instances, there’s just not enough time to speed home and change your outfit from work to play. That’s where creativity (and thoughtful planning) comes into play when you gear up to head to work on one of these busy days. There are plenty of ensembles that are work appropriate and can also be easily transformed into cocktail hour-friendly styles. Here are three simple outfit examples and quick tips for stylish outfits to take you from the office to happy hour with no pit stops in between:

1. The Pencil Skirt

This work wardrobe staple is likely to be part of your everyday ensemble. But when the clock strikes 5 p.m. and you’ve got a margarita special to catch, you’ll need to jazz up your pencil skirt with a couple quick switch-outs. As Cosmo’s associate accessories editor explains here, “A bright clutch and crop top (hide them in your work bag) make a pencil skirt party-ready.” As shown in her photos, she even kept the daytime blazer to add smartness to the look, draping it over her shoulders for chic lines and an easy on/off situation.

2. The Versatile Dress

Another go-to office outfit of choice, a dress is a simple slip-on solution for those days when piecing together an entire ensemble seems impossible. When you wear a dress to work, make sure the cut is not too low in the front, and be mindful of hem length — right above the knee is fine. As for making it less stuffy and more sexy? This edit on Lyst suggests to browse “both casual and formal dresses for modern office style.” Shift dresses are always equal parts appropriate and flattering, and you can make yours ready for the bar by slipping on a pair of killer heels and a colorful clutch. It’s simple and classy but not too conservative.

3. The High-Waisted Slacks

With all the recent change in gender roles in our culture, the shift has made a fair impact on the fashion industry as well. Loose-fitting slacks are not just for men. In fact, they look super polished on women! The first photo in this article on The Zoe Report shows a woman wearing printed, high-waisted slacks that are belted mid-torso. Paired with patterned heels, a non-presumptuous blouse and a yellow clutch, the slacks give a formal yet fun vibe to the overall outfit. This is one getup you won’t have to change at all to crossover from office to happy hour, and that’s something to get on board with!

What are your favorite transitional wardrobe staples? How do you take your style from office to happy hour? I'd love to hear!

best of the red carpet: Golden Globes

Best dressed of the 2016 Golden Globes

Happy Tuesday everyone! Did anyone else watch the Golden Globes on Sunday night? I love watching award shows, mainly because I love hearing and reading what everyone has to say about them during the week that follows — did J.Law trip again? could Ricky Gervais actually stick to a mostly-clean monologue? was that joke funny or just inappropriate? And of course, the best dressed lists. Today I'm going through some of my favorite looks from the Golden Globes red carpet, because I think most girls can agree red carpet gowns are the epitome of fashion.

boyfriend blazer / faded chambray / sequin shirt (old, similar here and here) / Express jeans (50% off through Christmas!) / Forever 21 boots (sold out, similar here and love these!) / NARS lipstick in "Scarlet Empress" / Baublebar button-up ring / similar silver watch

There's still a little time left in the Season of Sparkles (aka the holidays), which means all things sequins, shiny and shimmery! I've really been getting into the sparkle this year, buying sweaters and shirts with hints of glitter and wearing sequined tops like this one. For this outfit, I wanted to add a girly touch to a classic menswear look, which is a style I'm currently loving.

The boyfriend blazer, chambray and pointed toe boots add a masculine touch to the outfit, while the pink sequin top adds a festive and feminine element that's absolutely perfect for the holidays. This outfit is fun but still low-key enough to wear to the office. Just throw on a matching lipstick and you're ready to go!

Are you wearing all things that sparkle this season? What's your favorite way to add a little glitter to your outfit?

what to wear to holiday parties

A beautiful dress for every holiday occasion.

The holidays are upon us (finally!) and that often means a full calendar of parties, events and get-togethers. My favorite parties are the ones that require guests to get all dolled up — and who doesn’t love to rock sequins on New Year’s Eve?! I’ve only got a couple parties on my calendar so far, but that won’t stop me from buying at least one new dress! I’m sure many of you are also looking for a dress or two for holiday work parties or maybe even family gatherings, which is why I rounded up some of my favorite styles from stores like Nordstrom, Asos, Tobi and Express

Are you dressing up for any holiday parties this year? Which dress is your favorite? I think mine has to be... a tie between the black maxi and the metallic green dresses!

gift guide: for her

gifts for all the women in your life, in every price range

Another gift guide is here, and this one is for the ladies! I've gathered up some of my favorite gift ideas for sisters, best friends, moms, boyfriend's girlfriends and all the other women you know! I found a lot of goodies this year, but I think my favorite is definitely the the Kate Spade wine stopper and cork screw! How adorable, right?

I also love the passport holder, perfect for the girl on the go. It's also customizable, which is great if you're looking to add a personal touch! And of course, you can't go wrong with a cute coffee mug or the perfect dish and organizer to display your favorite baubles.

What's on your Christmas wish list this year?

gift guide: for him

gifts for every man in your life

It's that time of year again... the gift guides are out! I love picking out gifts, and this year I found a bunch of great stuff for all the men in your life. For the fashion-forward, the cocktail lovers and the techies, I've rounded up some of my favorite items in every price range. Picking out the perfect gift can be stressful, so I tried to find things that could appeal to most guys — every guy needs a watch and underwear, right?

What is your method for picking out the perfect gift?

faux leather skater skirt / cropped sweater (old, similar here and here — also love this one!) / black tights / black booties (old, similar here and here) / chain clutch / Versona sunglasses (similar here) / NARS lipstick in "Scarlet Empress"

I'm usually a jeans-and-sweater type girl when it comes to the colder months, but lately I've been trying to break out of that sartorial box and challenge myself to create some looks that involve a little more effort. Because let's be honest: jeans and a sweater is pretty much the go-to for those freezing days in January. That's why I donned the tights and a chic faux leather skirt to add some spice to this cropped sweater.

With regular jeans, this cropped sweater tends to look a little blah, with the shorter hem getting lost in all the denim. With the sweater, I think it plays dual roles as both the statement piece and the blank canvas. The leather skirt draws the eye, so the plain sweater doesn't draw too much attention from it, yet the shorter cut makes it really pop (if that makes sense!). I love how the all-black from my skirt to my boots allows the dark wine color of the sweater to stand out, but it still keeps a sophisticated look perfect for a date night. I got this leather skirt last year, and let me tell you: If you don't have a leather skirt in your closet, head to the nearest mall because you need one! It is so versatile and easy to dress up and down.

What's your substitute for the jeans-and-sweater monotony of fall/winter? I could use more ideas! ;)

Color Coded: Wine

A monochrome wish list for the truly devoted wine-lovers.

Have you ever met anyone or heard of those people who wear exclusively one color? Like everything they own (or at least the majority) is a shade of that one color. I read a cool story about it a long time ago by Joanna Goddard of A Cup of Jo and then when I was ringing up a woman at Versona last weekend she was buying a pile of cobalt blue items. She told me she wears it all the time because it brings out her blue eyes. Well, if I had to choose one color to dress in (besides black ;), I'm pretty sure it would be wine/oxblood.

It’s my favorite hue for fall/winter, but I also love it in the summer because it's a little bit unexpected for the season of brights. It’s such a versatile color, yet it still makes a statement. The wine color was everywhere last year, and the trend doesn't look like it will slow down this year. You can find it on everything from clothes and hats to lipstick and tableware, and I love all of it. Which is why I had to put together a color-specific sort of wish list of everything I love in the wine shade — including, of course, wine ;)

Would you ever dress exclusively in one shade? What color would you wear if you had to pick one? I don't think I could restrict myself, but there's something I love the concept of a monochrome wardrobe!

On Saturday, Adam and I finally visited my uncle’s pumpkin patch and picked out a few pumpkins for our apartments! This fall has been exceptionally busy with my full-time job, part-time work and blogging, which is why we had to wait until the week before Halloween to get our pumpkins. But better late than never, right!

We went to the farm around 11 a.m., and it was SO COLD. The sky was filled with clouds and the wind was a step away from tornado level! My hair could not be contained. Here’s how most of my pictures turned out, if you need a good laugh:

Flannel, booties and pumpkins — oh my!

Needless to say, we didn’t spend a lot of time there. By the time I found my pumpkins and took a few photos, my hands were numb. I don’t think I’m ready for this whole winter thing that’s coming… But we still had a fun time picking through the pumpkins. We’re planning to paint them tomorrow night — any ideas for how I should paint mine??

As for my outfit, I wore one of my new fall uniforms this year. I’ve already bought two new flannel shirts, and I wear them probably at least once a week (although we both know I’d wear them every day if I could!). I love layering this flannel shirt under sweaters and cardigans like this one for a slightly preppier look. I paired it with my newest booties (the wedge heel makes them great for all-day walking!) and this crossbody bag I got for my birthday, which is so cute and convenient.

Have you been pumpkin picking this year? Do you like to carve or decorate pumpkins? I’d love to know!
