transitional fitness clothes

Transitional pieces to take you from the gym to the street in style.

As you probably know by now, one of my favorite motivators for a good sweat sesh is a killer outfit. But one thing I look for especially in workout gear is a transitional element that I can take from the gym to the street. Two pieces I can't get enough of right now are cute tights and strappy sports bras — the perfect duo in any athleisure look, if you ask me.

I've been doing a little shopping around (natch) for some great transitional pieces and had to share some of my finds with you today. I've had my eye on these tie-dye leggings by Free People for weeks; they went on sale for 40% off over the weekend and sold out yesterday (go figure) — I'll keep watching for a restock and post an update.

I hope you're all having a great week so far! Yesterday was the most Monday-ish Monday, so I'm extra happy that we're one day closer to a 3-day weekend!

What kind of workout gear do you wear most? How do you like to transition your gym clothes?

baublebar sale picks

my top picks in baublebar's sitewide sale!

I like to consider myself something of a professional shopper, and part of earning that title is about finding the best deals and bargains around. Baublebar is one of my go-to stops for finding trendy and quality jewelry because their styles are always on point. You might remember a few guest appearances Baublebar made in my last wish list. But let's be honest, it makes an appearance on just about every one of my wish lists ;)

This week they're having a killer sale on the entire site, offering up to 30% off. So if you're in the market for a some new jewels — or maybe the rest of your closet is just begging for some new accessories ;) — now is the time to check it out. I hope you're all having a great week — mine has been flying by, and I'm definitely not complaining!

5 things working in retail taught me

five things every person who's worked in retail knows to be true

When I took my first retail job last year, I came into it with a little background experience in waitressing, so I had an idea of what I was getting myself into when dealing with customers. And while the experience is going to be different at every store, I'd still have to say that serving is a much harder and more thankless job than retail. That being said, you're always going to find yourself dealing with the worst customers at some time or another. After a few months of working in this industry, here are a few things I've learned:

1. The customer is rarely right, but you still have to be nice.

This saying is a favorite in the world of customer service, and rightfully so, as it usually pays off. But in the regular day to day activities of retail, it becomes evident very quickly that people really have no idea how things work. Customers will argue about prices until you can prove to them that, yes, the price marked on the item is, in fact, correct. They will share their dismay that you don't carry or ran out of their sizes. And you still have to smile and nod and thank them for shopping at your store.

2. That doesn't mean the customers will be nice back to you.

No matter how big your smile is or how sweet you sound when you tell a customer to "Have a great day!" or "Thank you for shopping with us!", there will always be people who just. don't. care. People who simply ignore you and walk out, people who look directly at you and walk away without saying a word, and people who respond with a glare or a snarl. You can spend five minutes trying to get a hat off a metal stand on the very top shelf for a customer who will then decide they don't actually want it — but instead of thanking you for getting it or apologizing for your trouble, they'll just hand it to you and ask someone else to get another item down for them. For those who preach about that Midwestern friendliness, work a few weeks in retail and you'll find out that even the nicest cities have some stunningly rude people.

3. The laziness is REAL.

If I had a dollar for every time I picked up a pair of earrings sitting on a table right next to their display rack, or a hanger put on the rack backwards, I would never have to work again. You want to leave a pile of clothes in the dressing room? Fine. Ask me to put away some shirts you decided weren't so cute? Not a problem. But taking a piece of jewelry off its stand and dropping it there on the table? Here's a tip for shoppers: IT'S NOT. THAT. HARD.

4. Stupid questions do exist. And you'll answer a lot of them.

Is this a shirt or a dress? This is a question I got last weekend, and at first I'll admit that it's not such a silly question; some shirts are long and dresses are short. But when you put it on and it goes down past your knees, it's a dress. Yes, I'm sure it's a dress. No, really — I promise, it's a dress.

5. Your responsibilities are more than your job description.

In the 9 months I've spent as a part-time sales associate, I have been a cashier, a visual merchandiser, a janitor and a personal shopper. I have unwrapped, hung and steamed countless garments, and I have seen too many middle-aged women in bras. I have followed needy customers around and carried piles of clothes for women who seem to think we have nothing else to do. I have climbed ladders and nearly dropped metal bars on my head. Working in retail is far more than selling clothes.

warm-weather necessity: wedges

8 wedges to step into summer

1. G by Guess  2. BP 3. Michael Kors 4. BCBG 5. Dolce Vita 6. Steve Madden 7. Jeffrey Campbell 8. Guess

There are so many reasons to look forward to summer, but one at the top of my list this year is wearing wedges. If you've been following miscelenious for a while, you might recall my little surgery last year, which prevented me from wearing heels for the majority of the summer (and most other types of shoes, sadly). So, this summer I am so ready and excited to wear cute new wedges! I want to invest in a really nice pair that will last a long time and go with everything... Maybe these adorable Jeffrey Campbell cutout wedges? Or the Michael Kors espadrilles with a nautical vibe? All of these pairs would be so versatile and fun for summertime!

Which wedges are your favorites? And what are you looking forward to wearing most this summer?

Cool summer style

maxi skirt (similar) / Forever 21 v-neck tee / Old Navy slip-ons (on sale for less than $15!) / Steve Madden sunnies (similar) / Fifth and Mae necklace (old) / chain-link bracelet (similar) / NARS velvet matte lip pencil in Cruella

I know this is an unusual outfit for mid-July, but Iowa is not known for its consistent weather patterns, and the day I wore this was cloudy and chilly. This is my favorite maxi skirt because it is so big and flowy, and I just feel a little fancier every time I wear it :) I love pairing with a plain v-neck to make it a bit more casual and relaxed, but I also like to style it with a crop top for the weekends. (P.S. this is one of my favorite outfits to transition to fall!)

What are you all up to this week? I've got a date night with Adam tonight since we didn't get to see each other all weekend, and my sister and I are taking our mom to see the new Minions movie because my mom loooves the minions — it's adorable! Then Adam and I heading to the zoo for Zoo Brew Wednesday night and this weekend two of our friends are getting married! It's definitely going to be an exciting week! Hope everyone is having a great Monday!

The perfect printed sundress

Express sundress / Target sandals (old, similar) / straw hat (similar) / Baublebar bangle (old, similar) / Shopbop rings here and here / American Eagle denim jacket / Smith sunnies / Rimmel by Kate lipstick in No. 08

Insert happy dance here because this is my first outfit post in two months! Yay! I'm happy to report that I've been back to two regular shoes for about a month now post-surgery, and it's been great. I still can't wear heels, and my right foot is still too swollen to wear some of the cute new shoes I've bought this year — the surgeon said swelling could last for up to 3 months :( — but I'm just happy to have two functional feet again! Anyway, on to the dress...

How fun is this print? I love sundresses, and I've been trying to bring in more colors to my wardrobe this year, so when I saw this dress at Express for 40 percent off, it was a no-brainer. I wanted to keep the accessories simple and let the dress do the work, so I wore tan sandals and dainty gold jewelry and even kept my makeup neutral with a dusty pink lipstick (one of my favorites!). The hat was a fun addition too because, in my opinion, you can't go wrong with a sundress and straw hat combo for summer. I love how simple and easygoing this dress is, yet it was still perfect for the office with a denim jacket over it. And I think it'll be a great transition piece for fall — you can just add ankle boots and the jean jacket for a fun cooler-weather look!

How do you like to accessorize your sundresses?

Brands I love (and why I love them)

my favorite brands for shopping and why i love them

People often ask me where I shop or where I buy most of my clothes, and honestly, I have a hard time answering. Depending on the time, I could say I shop at many different stores or just one or two. When I really think about it, though, I tend to come back to the same group of brands for certain things. If I really spent the time to think about it, this list could go on for a while, but I'll keep it simple and only tell you about my top four most trusted brands.

ASOS. The amazing assortment of high-quality and affordably priced clothing is enough to make Asos anyone's favorite brand. I love all the unique, eclectic styles that you can't just find at the mall. Everything you buy here looks personal to you, which I love. But on top of that, it also offers free shipping and returns, which is HUGE when you're trying to guess sizes in different styles. They make the whole process super easy, and in my book, customer service is the key to good business.

Baublebar. Jewelry and accessories can add up really fast, so it helps to have a go-to place for affordable products. Baublebar offers beautiful, high-quality jewelry at a reasonable price. They update their inventory often, so there is always a great rotation. Plus, their Guest Bartender is a celebrity-curated selection that always kills it. I get a lot of my earrings from here, because they always have new styles.

Express. I've been shopping at Express for a long time, and I've recently converted to wearing only their jeans because they are the only ones long enough and comfortable enough for me. Also, they go on sale all the time. Which is the second reason I love Express: SALES. I can't pass up a good sale or coupon, and Express has them all the time. It's also a great place to find professional clothes and jewelry.

Bare Minerals. I'm not a big makeup guru. Honestly, I don't even know that much about it. I find one brand that I like and tend to stick with it. My mom got me started on Bare Minerals when I was in high school, and I've been using it ever since. It is the only foundation I trust on my face because it goes on very smooth and looks natural. I only use the powders because I think they're more comfortable and allow my skin to breathe. The other thing I always buy here is my eyebrow pencil. I haven't tried many brow pencils, because once I found this one I stopped looking. It's that good.

What brands do you use most frequently?

Summer wish list

I'm currently taking a break from shopping and between new season essentials coming out, major sales and having lots of extra time for online shopping — it's not been easy to keep my wallet closed. That's why I thought a summer wish list would be a kind of compromise.

First off, I am crushing majorly on two things I've never cared for before this year: white jeans and rompers. I never liked white pants much because they can get dirty so easily, but I've seen so many cute styles with them that I'm falling in love. Same with rompers; I really like the ones that look like dresses. The added comfort of shorts make them the perfect answer to a windy day.

Second is the tassel trend. While I'm still not quite as head over heels as many of the bloggers I follow, it is definitely starting to grow on me. These earrings and this bracelet set from Baublebar would add such a fun look to a white dress.

This necklace: Oh my gosh, I die. [Insert heart-eyed emoji a zillion times.] I saw it when I was shopping online for a Mother's Day gift and I couldn't stop staring. I can see it with a fabulous LBD for date night or a white off-shoulder top for daytime. Love.

Finally, bright pink lips and these gorgeous wedges. I love a good pink lip in the summer and, of course, wedges. This pair is especially fantastic with the tropical print. I might just have to buy them as a celebration for getting out of this boot at the end of 6 weeks :)

Hope you all enjoyed my summer favorites! What are you shopping for right now?

How to wear summer's hottest trend

Forever 21 top (similar) / Express jeans (similar) / wedges (old, similar – also love these) / Smith sunnies / Francesca's clutch / NARS lip pencil in Yu / Baublebar bangle / rhinestone bracelet (similar) / chain link bracelet (similar

Off-shoulder tops are really hot this year, and I'm dying to get my hands on a few. I've always been a fan of this style but it always seemed too "scandalous" when I tried to wear it before. If it's done right, off-shoulder tops/dresses can look fun and flirty without being revealing. I stumbled across this top at the mall one day and I couldn't resist. It's my first jump into this trend, but it certainly won't be the last! I love the boho-peasant-type feel, and I think it's perfect for a casual look with jeans or shorts. Unfortunately I couldn't find the same one online, but Forever 21 has a bunch of other great prints and colors to choose from, and I'm also loving this one from Nordstrom.

If you're nervous about trying out this trend, I recommend starting with something similar to this shirt that still has straps. It doesn't feel quite as open and it's a little more secure than some of the tops that go straight across. That being said, there are so many different off-the-shoulder styles to try so just find one you like and do your thing!

Looking back at these photos makes me even more restless to ditch the crutches and trade my boot for wedges! It's been so long since I've worn anything other than pajamas and sweats! Although I have to say I am enjoying all the extra reading and Pinterest time I've been getting...it feels a little bit like being back in college again ;)

P.S. A lovely spring dress and the perfect striped skirt

Striped skirt and smart shopping

Express skirt (cheaper versions here and here) / shirt (old, similar here and here) / Nessi and Co. bracelet / Baublebar button up ring / Forever 21 ear jackets (similar) / heels (old, similar) / MAC lipstick in "pink nouveau"

This striped skirt is one of my new favorites. It's so fun and classic, and it truly goes with everything! I bought it back in February anticipating I'd get a lot of use out of it this summer, and I can't wait to wear it with this top. I actually saw it at Express and thought it looked cute, but the price tag was a bit more than I was willing to pay for it. Then I stopped at Target the same day and found the exact same skirt for $40 less! So you can bet I tore it from the rack and practically ran to the checkout. Unfortunately, I can't find it on Target's website anymore, but I linked up the Express version and a couple similar styles for much cheaper.

I wore this outfit to work one day when the weather was especially summery, and it was perfect office attire. I chose strappy heels to give it a slightly edgier feel than classic black pumps and went for bright accessories to liven it up (because you know I'm a little obsessed with bright colors right now). The other thing I have to mention about this skirt is the shape. The material is really thick, so it holds its round shape pretty much no matter what (you may notice my bum looks especially round in the side views ;). Do you remember in the second Pocahontas movie when she wore that wooden skirt hoop and it flew up every time she sat down? That's how I felt when I sat down, haha! Luckily there were no skirt scandals, so it's safe to wear in public ;)

How's everyone's week going so far? I've got a really busy week ahead at work, so I have a feeling it's going to go by really fast!

The perfect Easter dress + a special discount!

Asos dress / clutch (old, similar here and here) / Nessi and Co. bracelet c/o (use code EU10 for 10% off)

I'm so excited to share one of my favorite new outfits with you today! It's finally dress weather, and if you've been reading my blog lately, you know I could not be happier about the spike in temperatures. I bought this dress a few weeks ago to wear for weddings this summer, but it would also be the perfect dress for Easter! I paired it with nude and silver accessories to keep it classy and simple, but I think the pop of pink on my lips adds just enough color to keep it interesting. Oh, and the purple sunnies ;)

The powder blue color of this dress and the shape of the neckline are just beautiful. I think it would also look great with a white blazer to make the silver jewelry stand out even more. I specifically want to point out this gorgeous Nessi and Co. bracelet. I've been trying to stock up on more bracelets, and I really like the style and detail of this one. Nessi and Co. is a new company that sells affordable and high-quality silver jewelry. I love that each piece is less than $20, and right now you can get 10% off using the code EU10!

This past weekend I attended a photography class to learn some of the fundamentals of taking and staging photos, and it was such a great time. It got me really excited to start taking more photos and doing more photo shoots, so get ready to see a few more outfit posts thrown in the mix of my usual content! I hope your week is off to a great start :)

Shopping haul

If you read my springtime favorites post two weeks ago, you probably know how I've been itching to spice up my wardrobe. After finding a few great sales, I pulled the trigger and ordered some great new pieces. Here's the breakdown:

Express:

Double pearl bracelet. I'm not a big bracelet person, but I do love pearls. This one was on sale for less than $10 so I thought I'd give it a try.

Black shimmery scarf. I've had my eye on this one for a while, but I wasn't about to pay full price for it. I've been wearing it on repeat since it arrived.

Green blouse. All my tops seem to be either tank tops or sweaters, so I thought it was time I expanded into some new styles. This one is really comfy and looks great with a skirt and black skinnies.

Silver necklace. I've been going heavy on the gold lately, so I chose the silver in this necklace, which I love. Bonus: It looks great with the green top.

Black sequin cami. I have this in white too, and love how they add a fun peek-a-boo element to sheer tops.

Baublebar:

Pearl ring. This is another one I've been looking at for a while, and I finally decided to order it. Have I mentioned I love pearls?

Gold ear jackets. Unique earrings are my kryptonite right now, and these ones are fabulous. They were practically in my ears the second I took them out of the box.

ILY Couture:

Box earrings. These finally came in the mail yesterday, and I put them on immediately after opening. I'm pleased to say they are even better than I anticipated! I'll definitely get my money's worth out of them!

Barred ring set. I put these ones on my spring favorites because I wear rings more than any other jewelry, so I know these will be on heavy rotation.

Have you been hitting the end-of-season sales lately? Do you have your eye on anything fun? I'd love to hear :)

Weekend shopping roundup

Express is having a great sale on dresses, so I just ordered this black one (for only $40!) to wear on New Year's Eve. I really wanted to get this purple version to add a little color to my closet, but they didn't have my size in stock. Must be a sign that black is my color ;)

I love the style and feel of this dress. I already have it in the navy blue sparkle, and it's just so comfy! It's so easy to throw on, and I always feel great when I wear it. That's why I couldn't resist getting another one when the price was so good.

These pearl studs are also on the way, because I've been dying to try out this double-sided earring look for a while. I can't wait to get them in the mail next week — along with all the Christmas presents I bought over the weekend :)

I'm also loving this floral dress from ASOS (Maybe add it to the Christmas list? ;), and these new earrings from Forever 21. I've been looking at these earrings for weeks, and I finally just bought them while I was picking up a few gifts. Now I can't stop wearing them!
