Happy Halloween Eve, everyone! Are you doing anything fun this weekend? Adam and I still haven't decided if we will be dressing up or not...I think we'll just wait till the very last minute and see what happens, ha! We are going to Iowa State's Homecoming game (well, the tailgate) tomorrow, and we're really excited to go back to Ames for the first time since the beginning of football season. Go Cyclones!

5 ways to inspire creativity

Tips to think differently when you're feeling uninspired.

I’ve always been a creative person, from the pictures I drew as a kid to the stories and poetry I made up as a teen and now to the stories and blog posts I write on a daily basis. But even being in the creative industry, there are times when it seems impossible to be creative. Thinking up new ideas and fresh takes on the same subject (often the case in publishing) can be hard to do, and sometimes inspiration just doesn’t hit when you need it to.

During those desperate times when it seems that you’ll never have a new or interesting thought again, I’ve found that there are several ways to inspire creativity. Whether you’re by yourself or working with a team, these five things can help you get back into your creative headspace.

Book Review: ‘Luckiest Girl Alive’

The one thing that makes "Luckiest Girl Alive" an exceptional book.

Luckiest Girl Alive is another book that I put on my reading list immediately — both for the stellar reviews it was getting and because Reese Witherspoon decided to produce the movie version right after it came out, which had to mean it was really good. Once I started reading it, I had a hard time getting into the story, though. The main character was pretty hard to like at first, but as the story went on I gained a serious respect for Jessica Knoll and how she created a character with such depth.

One complaint I often have about characters in books is that they are too one-dimensional. Too many authors think it’s enough to give a character a favorite TV show and a weird quirk and call it a day. The best stories are ones that bring their characters to life and make the reader forget they’re reading fiction. That’s what happened for me while I was reading Luckiest Girl Alive. There were several moments where I thought I was reading a memoir instead of a fiction book. The writing, plot and characters were that good.

The story revolves around Ani, a woman in her late 20s who’s engaged to her "dream" man and works as a writer at one of the top women’s magazines in New York. The first two-thirds of the book is very mysterious: We know that Ani has a dark secret from her past, that she has agreed to be featured in a documentary about it and that she will do just about anything to appear totally changed and successful for the taping. Beyond that, we have really no idea what happened, other than that it was the changing point in her life.

The book goes back and forth between present-day Ani and her teenage days at a popular prep school, when she was known as TifAni FaNelli. We find out TifAni has been kicked out of her Catholic school for smoking weed, and her parents have sent her to a prep school less for punishment and more for social status, which is obviously very important both to Ani and her mom, even though they both have different opinions as to what that means. We learn of the horrors TifAni faced as a teenager trying to push her way into the popular crowd — many of which seem like they could have been her life-changing secret, but they’re only leading up to it.

Despite being mistreated by the “friends” she’s trying so hard to please, every hit against her only makes TifAni try harder to get into the group. The story is told in her point of view, so we get to see every twisted thought and reaction she has to each event, all of them adding up to make her the calculating adult she is today. That’s what makes Ani’s character so interesting: She can manipulate any situation to get exactly what she wants from it. She can read people and use it to her advantage, even using a coffee date with potential interns at her magazine as a test for whether they should be hired or not.

Ani’s character is extremely smart and perceptive — she’s not one to be tricked, and she refuses to let anyone else but her be in control of a situation. For her, success is all about the outward appearance of her life: her job at a highly recognizable magazine, her engagement to the old money (and therefore the best money) Luke Harrison, her thin figure and designer clothes. Everything she does has a reason behind it, and her motivation to join the classy ranks of her fiancé’s circle goes way back to her freshman year of high school.

Luckiest Girl Alive is a complex character study with so much drama that you won’t want to put it down. I loved getting to see Ani’s imperfections from her point of view and getting to see every scheming, messed up thought she had. The mysterious event from her past didn’t turn out as much of a shock to me, but that didn’t hurt its impact on the book. It was still an incredible story with so many intricate details weaved throughout. It’s no Gone Girl, which is what people have compared it to, but it’s definitely a must-read.

Have you read Luckiest Girl Alive? What did you think? Did you love the character development as much as I did? I’d love to hear…

Flannel, booties and pumpkins — oh my!

On Saturday, Adam and I finally visited my uncle’s pumpkin patch and picked out a few pumpkins for our apartments! This fall has been exceptionally busy with my full-time job, part-time work and blogging, which is why we had to wait until the week before Halloween to get our pumpkins. But better late than never, right!

We went to the farm around 11 a.m., and it was SO COLD. The sky was filled with clouds and the wind was a step away from tornado level! My hair could not be contained. Here’s how most of my pictures turned out, if you need a good laugh:

Flannel, booties and pumpkins — oh my!

Needless to say, we didn’t spend a lot of time there. By the time I found my pumpkins and took a few photos, my hands were numb. I don’t think I’m ready for this whole winter thing that’s coming… But we still had a fun time picking through the pumpkins. We’re planning to paint them tomorrow night — any ideas for how I should paint mine??

As for my outfit, I wore one of my new fall uniforms this year. I’ve already bought two new flannel shirts, and I wear them probably at least once a week (although we both know I’d wear them every day if I could!). I love layering this flannel shirt under sweaters and cardigans like this one for a slightly preppier look. I paired it with my newest booties (the wedge heel makes them great for all-day walking!) and this crossbody bag I got for my birthday, which is so cute and convenient.

Have you been pumpkin picking this year? Do you like to carve or decorate pumpkins? I’d love to know!

Wandering the Web: Have a lovely weekend.

A new frappuccino flavor, how to crash a party and the cost of your shoe collection.

Happy Friday babes! Who else is ready to get party that is the weekend started? (Throws hands up in the air — waves them like she just don't care.) I've been waiting for this Saturday for weeks because Adam and I are finally going to pick some pumpkins and have a real "fall" day. We'll be heading back to my uncle's pumpkin patch in the morning and then to a small town outside of Des Moines to get a few photos for an upcoming project I'm working on! I can't wait to share that one with you, but you'll find out soon enough :)

I hope you all have a lovely weekend, and here are some fun links from this week...

Lipstick Review Vol. 2

Reviewing Too Faced, Revlon, Maybelline and Bare Minerals Moxie lipsticks.

1. Too Faced Melted Long Wear Lipstick in "Melted Fig" — Okay, this is the nerd in me, but I usually do quite a bit of research on a lipstick before I buy it. I check out the color I want, look at reviews and photos of how it looks on other girls with similar skin tones. But this one was a completely spur-of-the-moment purchase. I’d never heard of Too Faced Melted before, but I was intrigued when my friend Ashley was looking at it in Sephora one day. I was hesitant because it’s a liquid in a squeeze tube, which I gave up on long ago in middle school. But seriously — it is now one of my all-time favorites. It goes on creamy but dries to a matte finish. And it lasts forever! I can get through a full meal and multiple drinks and barely need a touchup. Sometimes the dryness makes it feel like it’s wiped off, but when I look in a mirror it’s hardly moved. I’m not a huge fan of the fuzzy tip applicator (although it is soft!) because it’s a little bit harder to get a clean line, but overall, it’s my latest top pick. Rating: 5 stars.

2. Revlon Pearl in "Fuchsia Fusion" (No. 657) —This was one of the first lipsticks I bought back when I started wearing it a couple years ago. It’s the same brand as the purple I wrote about in my first review, but the formula is much better. It’s creamy and comfortable, but this one doesn’t rub off like chapstick. You’ll still need a touchup after a meal, but it doesn’t leave your lips feeling gross like some of the others I’ve tried. The color covers well and doesn’t bleed around the edges, which I can appreciate even more now that I’ve been testing out a few newer brands that do (looking at you, Moxie!). I like the magenta coloring of this one, as it’s bold but not too bright. It does have a very faint blue tint to it because it’s “pearl,” which bothers me sometimes depending on my mood. What can I say, I’m a matte girl! Rating: 4 stars.

3. Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids in "Vivid Rose" (No. 875) — This is one of my favorite shades. Period. It's a bold, vibrant pink that looks stunning on every skin tone. It's the perfect summer lip color, and I proved that many times over this past summer! I love the Maybelline lipsticks because they typically have a great, long-lasting formula and they're only $5. You can't beat that price when it comes to lipstick! This shade really does last well throughout the day. It does need touchups after meals, but it works as a lip stain, so even at the end of a 12-hour day your lips will still have the color on them. Actually, after I've worn it for a long time sometimes I'll wake up and shower and my lips will still be tinted from it! But it has a slight creamy feel, so it usually feels really good on my lips for all-day wear. I highly recommend this one if you're looking for bold pinks! Rating: 5 stars.

4. Bare Minerals Moxie in "Live It Up" — Bare Minerals is my go-to makeup brand. I’ve been using its foundation for years and love it. I have had my eye on the Moxie lipstick line for a long time, but for some reason I just never tried it out. But since I’m such a great bargain hunter lately that I happened to find this beautiful red shade in a sale basket at a salon recently. I didn’t spend much time debating because I was in need of a new red lipstick, and for just $10, I couldn’t pass up one of my favorite brands. As soon as I put it on, I knew I made the right decision. The formula is super creamy and has a nice shine to it. The color is the perfect dramatic red, which was exactly what I was looking for. It didn’t last through lunch, but the edges stayed in tact, so my touchup was minimal. The only bad thing I have to say about it is that it does bleed, so a lip liner is definitely necessary. Rating: 4.5 stars.

What lipsticks are you loving right now? What are your favorites from this roundup? Have you tried any of these before? Let me know!

A guy's take on... 5 fall trends

If you're a fashion girl, I'm sure you've had at least one conversation about dressing for men vs. dressing for women. I think most women (at least the women I know) would agree that we dress up more for the sake of other women than we do for men, and that's because we typically appreciate trendy clothes and inspired outfits more than men do. So I thought it would be fun to get a guy's (specifically, my boyfriend's) perspective on five current fall trends.

I learned a lot about Adam's thoughts toward women's fashion, and I was actually surprised by some of his answers. He's not one to think too much about fashion or trends (his closet is 80% T-shirts from college), but he does have a good sense of style, so it was fun to have a conversation about it. If you've never talked to your boyfriend about fashion, I highly suggest it — both for the insight and the laughs! The following responses are all straight from Adam, so read on to find out what he thought about these five fall trends...

A guy's (completely and brutally honest) perspective on 5 different fall trends.

Ponchos. When would you wear that? I don't even — I guess, no. No to all ponchos. I'm not convinced that's even a trend. I feel like it's a wannabe cape that's sold at an outlet store because they made it too long.
Verdict: (laughing) LOLOLOL pass.
(Side note: We were at an arena for a show last night and it was freezing. Adam said the poncho was starting to sound better and better, so not all hope is lost ;)

A guy's (completely and brutally honest) perspective on 5 different fall trends.

Flared jeans. I think my mom has those in her closet...from the 70s. It's like a bad Halloween costume. I guess you could wear those to a disco theme party though. So not all bad. And why is the waist so high (in the product photo linked)?
Verdict: (laughing) No.

Blanket scarves. I like them. I like scarves generally. I like it a lot more than an infinity scarf, which I feel it would be somewhat comparable to. Do they make those in gray? Is it big enough to be a blanket? It does somewhat look like you are tucking a napkin into your shirt.
Verdict: I like it.

A guy's (completely and brutally honest) perspective on 5 different fall trends.

Fringed skirts. Pass. That's all I have to say. Is it just in that color? I don't really like tan clothing. And I don't really like fray (aka, fringe ;). The length is also terrible — like what is it trying to be?
Verdict: Pass.

Metallic loafers. What would you wear them with? Casual wear? I like it with that outfit because the colors of the rest of her clothing are very plain and neutral, which allows the shoes to stand out. The shoes are such a loud color that I think they look really cool as long as you don't have too much going on.
Verdict: Good in the right context.

What do you think about these trends? Do you agree with some of Adam's votes, or disagree completely? What other trends would you like a guy's perspective on? I'd love to hear...

Lipstick Review Vol. 1

My thoughts on four NYX, Revlon, Rimmel and NARS lipsticks

If you know me at all, you're probably thinking: "How did it take THIS LONG for this girl to do a lipstick review?!" I don't really have an answer for why it's taken me so long, but I finally did it! For each review you can expect a general description of each shade, plus a rating out of 5 stars. So here we go with the first of many!

1. NYX Matte lipstick in "Pure Red" — This is actually one of my favorite colors, but (and this is a really big but) one of my least favorite formulas. The red has just a hint of scarlet-orange and is great for my lighter skin tone. I always get a ton of compliments when I wear it, and I like to use it as an alternative for a darker, more "red" red. But color does not equal comfort, and this stuff feels pretty gross on my lips by the end of the day. Maybe it's the matte formula, but it's a bit thick and it always seems to get chunks in it throughout the day — even after I've thoroughly treated my lips. Rating: 2.5 stars.

2. Revlon Super Lustrous lipstick in "Plum Velour" (No. 850) — Again, I love love love the color of this lipstick. It's the perfect non-intense purple for fall (or year-round, really). The problem, again, is the formula. It's weird because I have two other shades in this same lipstick and they are both great, but this one is super thin and rubs off almost instantly. Seriously, you will not make it through a cup of coffee with this one! It feels like I'm wearing Baby Lips, which is great, but as for long-lasting wear — not your best bet. Rating: 3 stars.

3. Rimmel Lasting Finish lipstick in "Bordeaux" (No. 124) — Oxblood lipstick is my favorite fall beauty trend. I just love the vampy-but-classy look of a wine-colored lip — there's something about it that just makes you look and feel mysterious, you know? This one is a great shade and a great formula (finally!), but the bad thing with dark colors is that they tend to bleed around the edges of your lips. I use this matching lip pencil to line my lips before applying the color all over, which usually helps. I want to try this lip protector to see if it works any better, because you absolutely need to have clean lines to pull off a dark lip shade. Rating: 4 stars.

4. NARS Satin Lip Pencil in "Rikugien" — This is my fourth NARS lip pencil, but it was part of the free birthday gift at Sephora, so I didn't get to pick out the color. I probably wouldn't have chosen this one on my own, but I actually really liked it for a more natural shade. It's got a bit of a pearly tone to it, and it essentially just accentuates the natural color of your lips. It feels nice and lasts fairly well, but I probably wouldn't pay the retail price of $26 because I think you could easily find a drugstore dupe for much cheaper. Rating: 3.5 stars.

That's it for Volume 1! Let me know if you have any questions about any of these, and if you have suggestions for lipsticks you'd like me to review, send them my way! I have plenty more to write about, but I'm always up for trying new lipsticks ;)

There's nothing better than cozying up in an oversized sweater when the cool weather hits. I love the versatility of cardigans, and the chunky knit of this one adds the perfect amount of texture to any ensemble. I paired it with a simple graphic tee here and added a dark oxblood lipstick for a fully "autumn" look. But honestly, you can wear this cardigan with so many different things. I've already worn it multiple ways, including over my favorite flannel.

The forecast is supposed to dip down into the 60s the rest of this week, so I'm excited to bring out even more sweaters and layers. I can't believe October is almost half over already... I guess it's time to start thinking about Halloween costumes, but I've never really been into dressing up for it so I have no clue what I'm going to do! Adam wants to do a couples costume, though, so that narrows it down. Any ideas for a great costume for two?! I need advice!

7 mistakes you're making when attending a career fair

Things you SHOULDN'T do when you're trying to land a job.

One of the cool things I’ve had the opportunity to do with my job is attend career fairs at my alma mater, Iowa State University (Go Cyclones!), as a recruiter. I was on the opposite end of it, looking for jobs when I was a student, so it’s really cool to see the view from the other side of the table. Being on the recruiting side has actually taught me more about what to do and what not to do as a student than I ever learned from attending the fairs as an applicant. It’s very interesting to see how students dress and prepare and pitch themselves when looking for jobs or internships, and after three fairs as a recruiter, I thought it was time to share a list of 7 mistakes you might be making when you’re trying to get hired.
