Wandering the Web: Catch ya later, February

Wandering the Web: Catch ya later, February. Fun links from the web this week.

I'm really happy February is over tomorrow. Even though it doesn't feel like it outside yet, it's still one step closer to spring. Do you have any plans for the weekend? Adam and I are doing this weird mystery box escape game for a friend's birthday tomorrow, so you can expect to hear all about that next week... (If you can't tell, I have mixed feelings about it. It sounds really fun, but also pretty strange. I'm not sure what to expect yet.)

Other than that, I think we'll be taking it easy this weekend. I stayed up late and finished Reconstructing Amelia last night (It was amazing! Definitely a must-read!) so I'll be looking for my next read. I just ordered a few from Amazon, so I'll let you know what I choose! Have a great last weekend of February, friends, and stay warm! Here are some great links:

1. Four things that kill relationships. (Time)

2. Would you take a one-way ticket to Mars? (NBC New York)

3. How to do anything in heels. (Who What Wear)

4. Five books that can change your life. (Time via Cupcakes and Cashmere)

5. I'd love to make these DIY wire baskets to use in my bedroom. (A Beautiful Mess)

6. Not all breakups are bad. (The Everygirl)

7. How to lose weight in four easy steps. (via A Cup of Jo)

8. Hilary Duff is acting again, and it doesn't look half bad. (YouTube)

P.S. Did you get sucked into #thedress drama last night? THE WORLD CAN'T EVEN.

The new Express collection

Because I'm on Express' extra-special VIP email list (ok, maybe it's the same old list every shopper is on, but whatever), I found out yesterday about their new collection of sexy-casual tops called Express One Eleven.

After one quick look I was in love the pieces, because they all look like something I have or would wear. And the best part: every piece is less than $30. It's so affordable! I think my favorite items are the bralettes, which are only $15 each and look great with the shirts that have low backs or the racerback tanks. The strappy design adds an unexpected element to a plain top, and I'm a sucker for it.

I've been craving stripes lately, so the striped crop top and oversized v-neck really stood out to me. I always love something in an olive hue, and the knotted black tee is just different and fun. And with the black jeans, it gives it a little John Travolta circa Grease element, which I love for some reason. This collection is perfect for spring and summer (and really all year), and I can't wait to add a few of these to my closet soon!

Have you seen the collection yet? Which ones are your favorite?

Book review: 'Reconstructing Amelia'

Have you read Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight? I started reading it a couple weeks ago, and it is so good. It's a mystery surrounding the death of Kate's daughter Amelia. Everyone assumes the overachieving, academic superstar Amelia killed herself after she gets caught cheating at school — but Kate is skeptical.

The book goes back and forth between narrations by Kate in the present, Amelia in the weeks leading up to her death, and Kate's journal entries from before Amelia was born. The switching narrators allows readers to get in the head of both mother and daughter and see their relationship from both sides. It also shows exactly how different Amelia was compared to who her mom — and most everyone else — thought she was.

I'm only about halfway through it, but every new surprise leaves me wanting to read more. Half the characters seem suspect at one point or another, but each time I think I know what happened something else comes up and changes my mind. It's riveting, and so well written. It's hard to believe this is McCreight's debut novel, because her writing sounds like she's been doing it forever.

Between work projects and traveling over the weekend, I've had almost no time to read lately (also why this post isn't super in-depth — sorry, everyone!), but I can't wait to finish it this week. If you haven't read it, I'm already recommending it. And if you have, what did you think? No spoilers, please (!) but I'd love to hear your thoughts!

What's wrong with the #AskHerMore movement

Maybe you've seen or heard the hashtag "AskHerMore" on social media recently in reference to the red carpet interviews at award shows. It's a movement where women are beginning to call out the reporters and people who only ask them about who they're wearing and how their nails are done and so on. I'm all for asking women more important questions than just what designer they chose to wear and why, but I have to admit that I think the movement has some major holes in it.

Now hear me out: I feel this way because many of the women making these types of statements are still taking hours to pick out the perfect dress, do their hair, makeup, accessories and everything else. I think if women are going to be so offended to be asked about their dress and their nails, they shouldn't play into it so much. The red carpet has always been about best- and worst-dressed lists, who wore it better and what designers appear most on these celebrities. The red carpet is essentially a grand runway, and all of these women still play into it by spending hours to get ready, wearing the brightest dress and wearing million-dollar accessories.

And that's not a crime. It's fun! How many of us would love to get dressed up like that? It might be a little shallow, but I'm sure at least half of those people love getting glammed up for the big night. And I'm guilty of looking through all those best-dressed lists because I like fashion and I like to see all those different looks.

Do I think reporters should be asking more in-depth, important questions? Absolutely. But I don't think asking who designed their dress is a horrible question, and here's why: Some designer spent hours designing and creating that dress (I'm looking at you, Lupita). Many of them are custom-made, and it's just as much an art as anything else. Those designers deserve to get recognition for their creations, too, just like the stars are being recognized for whatever they've done. It's not like I'm watching to find out who made Emma Stone's outfit so I can go out and buy it — it's a sincere shoutout to the people helping those stars look so glamorous.

I 100 percent agree that reporters should ask better questions than these. They are notorious for treating women as if they only care about the fashion aspect. And this movement might be a good start. It's definitely garnering plenty of attention, and that's great. But my biggest question is why are we still allowing second-rate reporters to do the job? E! is not known for asking tough questions or reporting on actual news in a serious way. So are we really going to blame them for asking stupid questions? I have never liked E! or related programs, and I don't believe they count as real journalists because their mission is gossip. That means the question we should be asking is when will these award shows start working with real news teams to cover these programs? I think BuzzFeed would take them up on it.

Women definitely deserve to be asked real questions other than how long it took them to get ready and "Would you like to see your movie nominated next year?" (I mean, seriously? Is there more than one answer to that question?) I think there is still an audience for fashion-related questions, but it doesn't need to be all about that. All I'm saying is that we need to consider why #AskHerMore has become a necessary movement in the first place and how we expect it to change.

Wandering the Web: have a fun weekend

Do you have any fun plans for the weekend? As I mentioned yesterday, Adam and I are spending time with his family this weekend. We have the day off of work today and it's been so nice to sleep in, read a little bit and have our coffee while we watch Kelly and Michael. I miss these relaxing mornings so much! I hope you have a great weekend, and here are some fun links from the web this week:

1. Why one woman thinks getting engaged in your 20s is sad. (Vogue)

2. "I don't know why we don't go around thoughtfully complimenting one another all the time." (The New York Times)

3. I can't wait to see this movie. (Vulture)

4. The goodie bags given to each Oscar nominee are worth more than $100k. Each! (GQ)

5. Started reading this book last weekend and I can't put it down.

6. Such a cute idea for an Oscars viewing party. (Cupcakes and Cashmere)

7. How to brighten up your living room. (Nicolette Mason)

8. Four-ingredient fudge to curb your sugar cravings. (A Cup of Jo)

What's in my bag

With the weather being so cold lately, it's been really hard to get out, and we're starting to get a bit stir crazy. So this weekend Adam and I are taking a day off from work and going to see his family for a few days. It's only a two-hour trip, but it'll be nice to have even a small change of scenery! I thought it would be fun to share what I'm packing for the trip, so here are some of my travel must-haves.

Conair paddle hairbrush. This paddle brush has been by far the best one I've used. It doesn't pull my hair when it's wet, and the wide surface area makes drying my hair go super-fast.

Aveda Light Elements defining whip. I've never been a huge fan of products in my hair, but this defining whip is a miracle worker. It tames flyaways, adds moisture when the winter air dries it out and gives my hair an overall smooth look. I use it before I straighten or curl my hair, and then after it's curled to tame the stray hairs and texturize the waves.

Neutrogena oil-free moisturizer. I have combination skin, so it's always been hard to find moisturizer that keeps my skin soft without looking oily. I picked this one up on a whim when my previous brand was discontinued, and it's been amazing.

Dove Advanced Care deodorant. I've tried a lot of deodorants, but this one has definitely the most effective. It's dry, comfortable and it lasts all day.

Neutrogena pink grapefruit oil-free face wash. (Warning: cheesy anti-acne ad coming up!) When I was in college, I went through several different face washes in the attempt to cure my constant breakouts. None of them worked until I found this one. The grapefruit makes it smell great, and my skin feels so fresh and soft afterwards. I use the scrub about every other night and mornings when I travel. When I'm at home, I use the regular oil-free face wash with my Clarisonic brush in the shower.

Remington Wet 2 Straight flat iron. I'm almost a little embarrassed to talk about this flat iron. I bought it back in high school on sale at Wal-Mart when I couldn't afford a nice one, but it turned out to be a great purchase. I've tried some of the expensive flat irons, but I always prefer this one over the top brands. And I think the fact that I've been using it for at least 5 years really says something for its quality!

Handheld mirror (similar). A personal mirror is a necessity when traveling. I always use one when I'm curling the back of my hair, but it's also nice to have in case there isn't an available mirror when I'm trying to get ready somewhere. This way I can take it into any room and I never have to wait for the bathroom to open up if there's only one.

Conair Infinity Pro hair dryer. Another cheap surprise — this is my favorite hair dryer. It's so powerful that it dries my hair in less than 10 minutes straight out of the shower. I have pretty fine hair, so my hair has never taken all that long to dry, but this one is noticeably faster.

Bare Minerals makeup bag. This bag came with a set of makeup I bought a couple years ago, so (sadly) it's not available now. But it's the perfect size for all my makeup and it's small enough to fit in a purse so it's really handy to just throw everything in and go.

Wow, that seems like a lot of stuff now that I lay it all out and explain all of it! And I still have clothes and accessories to fit in my bag! What are your go-to beauty products when you travel?

Not your average dress: 11 styles for the offbeat girl

I'm now at that age where all my friends are getting engaged or getting married. At least, it seems like all of them. Adam and I have five (!) weddings on the calendar this year so far, and we're really excited to celebrate these huge moments with all of them — and for the chance to see friends we haven't seen for a while.

Aaaaaand for the new dresses I obviously have to get ;)

Toward the end of last year, I was getting pretty bored with most of the dresses in my closet. They all seemed to be a similar, uninteresting style. This year I want to focus on adding more silhouettes, prints and textures to my wardrobe. I love how each one of these dresses has something unique to offer that sets it apart from the rest.

I got a little carried away when I was looking online, so some of these might be just a teensy bit too eccentric for wedding guest attire... (especially the white one — obviously!) But they're perfect for a summer closet update!

Which one is your favorite? I have my eye on the floral cami dress and the red suspender layered dress. Here's hoping for a hefty tax return! ;)

What kind of workout shoes do you wear?

As part of my New Year's resolutions, I've been trying to get to the gym more often — as in at all (I know, awful). I'm currently using the same tennis shoes I bought when I was a senior in high school, which was a few years ago... Since I don't run much, they're still in decent shape, but I'm ready to buy a new pair. I've been looking at a few different kinds online, but I haven't found any that I really love yet. I'm looking for something bright and lightweight. Do you have any favorite brands or styles that you swear by?

Favorite winter nail colors Vol. 1

Ever since I discovered black nails could be chic back in my teen years, I've had a thing for dark shades on my nails for the winter. I don't use black on my nails anymore, but two of my favorite polishes are very dark blue and green, and people often mistake them for black. There's just something so classy about a dark, shiny manicure in the colder months.

I feel naked if I'm not wearing nail polish, so it's extremely rare that you'll find me without it. And right now, there's a 90 percent chance you'll find me wearing one of these colors. The darks are my tried and true favorites, and the white is a new one I just tried and (surprisingly) fell head over heels for. It seems like all the fashion bloggers are wearing white or some similar shade on their nails, so I decided to give it a try. I couldn't believe how much I liked it. It even caused me to go out and buy a new pinkish-white color (limo-scene by Essie).

Wandering the Web: Happy Valentine's Day weekend!

Introducing... a brand-new look to Wandering the Web! I love how my blog has evolved since I started it just six months ago. I feel like my posts are starting to reflect me a bit more, and that's why I wanted to redesign my WTW graphic for a more simplistic, modern look. I hope you like it too!

So you all know tomorrow is Valentine's Day. Adam and I went super chill with our planning this year. Tomorrow we'll be making lasagna (for the first time!) and cheesecake and spending the day watching movies. I picked Her. (Adam is dreading it already, but I've been dying to watch it!) What do you have planned for this weekend? Will you be celebrating or avoiding the love madness? I'd love to hear...

And as usual, some interesting things I found on the web this week:

1. An Instagram account to bring stories to life. (New York Times)

2. How to stick to your workout goals. Hint: hot workout gear is involved. (Hello Fashion)

3. A beautiful scrapbook I would love to make myself. (A Beautiful Mess)

4. Baublebar has a new guest designer collection with this blogger, and it is fabulous. (Wendy's Lookbook)

5. How to take photos in public without being embarrassed. (Who What Wear)

6. I really, really want to splurge on this gorgeous dress. (Revolve Clothing via Somewhere Lately)

7. A hilarious cartoon review of Jupiter Ascending. (Buzzfeed)

8. This woman's career is both impressive and inspiring. (The Everygirl)

8 movies to watch with your significant other

8 movies to watch with your significant other this Valentine's Day

I can't believe Valentine's Day is this weekend already. Do you have any plans for it? Adam and I aren't big Valentine's people. Last year we went out to dinner and spent the night in watching old movies on Netflix, and this year we plan to do pretty much the same, except we'll be making dinner this time. What do you typically do for Valentine's Day? Is it a big deal or more of a non-event?

With so many bloggers writing about date ideas for couples celebrating the holiday, I thought I'd go another route and share some of my favorite movies to watch with a significant other. I know a lot of girls get really excited to dress up and go out for a special date, but this is for those like me who prefer a more laid back date — where sweatpants are perfectly acceptable!

1. Date Night. An underrated hit, in my book. This came out a few years ago and truthfully, I haven't seen it since I watched it the first time. But I remember really liking it. Tina Fey and Steve Carell are both great, and they can turn a maybe-stupid plot into a good movie.

2. Friends with Benefits / No Strings Attached. Since they're both essentially the same movie, it's really about your preferences here. I liked both of them, but I choose Ashton Kutcher and his "period mix" for my leading man.

3. Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Guys LOVE this movie. Seriously, I didn't hear the end of it from Adam and all his friends until I finally watched this movie last fall. But they were right — it's a pretty great movie, and a good one for couples.

4. Safe Haven. Because I had to have one Nicholas Sparks movie, right? I considered The Vow, but it kind of breaks my heart. I really enjoyed Safe Haven, and I think it is more in line with a guy's movie interests too. Plus, it hasn't been totally overdone yet.

6. Crazy, Stupid Love. A classic for couples of all ages. Adam actually really enjoys this movie, as do most guys I know. It's funny, charming and sweet — you can't go wrong with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

7. 10 Things I Hate About You. I think this will be on every movies-to-watch list I ever make. It is funny, quirky, sweet, romantic — and Heath Ledger sings on the bleachers! I will never stop loving this one.

8. If I Stay. I can't recommend this one enough. (But, if you haven't read the book, do that before you watch it.) It's such a sweet, romantic and tragic story. Grab the tissues and snuggle in tight, because you won't want to let go once it starts.

What do you think of my list? Any I missed? Let me know your favorites in the comments!

Date Night Des Moines: Creme Cupcakes

Happy Wednesday, lovelies! I'm excited to announce a new series coming to miscelenious! Twice a month I'll be posting about a date night with Adam. I love the idea of taking one night every few weeks to have a real date with your partner. When you've been dating someone for a while it can become easy to get complacent and routine with your time together (I'm talking to you, Netflix). But Adam and I really want to change that. So in our attempt to bring more creativity to our adventures as a couple, I'll be sharing our date night ideas here with all of you — and I hope you'll share yours too!

Since we're both still kind of new to the Des Moines area, we've had a good time finding new places to go and things to do. There are so many great restaurants and bars, as I've said before, and we're still finding our way through it all. So when we were trying to find something fun to do that was a little more exciting than dinner and a movie, we stumbled on this adorable dessert bar downtown called Creme Cupcake + Dessert. It was close to the restaurant where we had dinner and we'd never heard of it. Plus I had been craving cheesecake for weeks, so it was the obvious winner ;)

Bedroom update: a cheery new bed set

When we finished painting my bedroom a few weeks ago, I could not wait to hurry up and find a new bed spread to replace the plain brown one I'd been using. My mom picked it out for the spare room, and I was never a fan. The brown comforter was too big for my full-sized bed, and now it was just too dark for the clean white walls.

Valentine's Day outfit ideas

1. Black dress (Express) 2. Love me some purse (Forever 21) 3. Leopard pumps (asos) 4. Crossed arrows necklace (Forever 21) 5. Floral dress (Express) 6. Lip pencil (NARS) 7. Candle (Forever 21) 8. Nightie (aerie) 9. Bralette (aerie) 10. Varsity sweater (aerie) 11. Heart socks (Express) 12. Boxers (aerie)

After being sick on the couch for most of last week, I'm finally getting my energy back and feeling more like myself. Just in time for Valentine's Day! And after two trips to the mall this weekend with Adam, I feel like buying myself a little something in honor of the holiday — and all the new season's clothes in stores now ;)

Maybe it's just me, but I think Valentine's Day calls for a little self-indulgence. We tend to focus so much on the couples part of it and forget that we deserve a little splurge for the occasion, too. That's why I decided to pick out some of my favorites for both going out and staying in, because both options call for celebration, am I right?

Whether you're going out for a special date, spending the night in with your S.O., or hanging out with your girls — take advantage of the holiday and treat yourself to something fun! Like a gorgeous pair of heels or some fun new PJs. These are my favorite picks for whichever way you choose to celebrate this year. I'm really loving these dresses from Express, but I'll be wearing something more along the lines of those socks and that varsity sweater while Adam and I stay in, cook dinner and watch movies together.

Do you like to dress up special for Valentine's Day, or are you not so interested in all the hearts and red everything? I'd love to hear...

Do you know how to fight successfully?

how to fight successfully in relationships via miscelenious

I was at home for lunch one day last week when The Talk came on (before you judge me, I just turned the TV on and it was there!). Anyway, they shared a quote from Pete Wentz explaining his divorce from Ashlee Simpson. He had this to say:
"I think there's an important thing where you know how to fight, because you can fight with somebody and it's not the end of everything. But if you don't know how to have those arguments, then they become nuclear."
I thought his take on it was kind of perfect. I've always been very shy and non-confrontational — and I've always been at least mildly aware of the way it affects my relationships. Whenever I was mad, my default used to be shutting the other person out and holding in my anger until I was just annoyed for the same reasons all the time. It sounds cliche, I know.

But Adam doesn't let me do that. The first times we fought, he was annoyed with my resistance to talk through the problem right away, but he just went with it anyway. And then one day he took a new stance; he called me out on my habit of shutting down and made me share what I was feeling when I was angry. I'll admit that I was resentful about it at first, but then I realized something kind of amazing.

When one of us was mad or upset about something, we could talk about it openly, tell each other why we were mad and how we wanted to fix it — and then it was over. We didn't leave angry, we both understood how we felt and how we would move forward. And then we went back to laughing and being happy again. Fights weren't this big, stressful thing anymore, and the issues that started them didn't become recurring incidents between us.

I think every couple has a different way of dealing with their issues, but it's important to talk through them and find resolutions that work for both people. When you're trying to make a relationship last, you can't just push everything under the rug — you have to know how to eliminate those problems. And if you find you're having the same fights over and over, maybe it's time to re-evaluate the real problem.

Adam has always been better at open communication — it's in his nature as an extrovert. This is what he has to say on fighting in relationships: It's okay to be angry with the other person, so long as both people know where that anger stems from and both know it's not the end of the relationship.

It makes sense, right? Couples are supposed to fight. It's learning from those arguments that helps you learn about each other. And ultimately, that's what is going to determine how long you stay together.

Non-cheesy Valentine's Day gift ideas

Valentine's Day gift ideas for every type of person on miscelenious

My parents always used to surprise my siblings and me with little gifts for Valentine's Day when we were growing up. It could have been candy, a shirt or a charm for my favorite charm bracelet — I never knew what I was going to get, but I always loved it. Even though most people I knew at the time didn't celebrate Valentine's Day with presents, I always loved the idea of giving gifts for the special day.

Maybe you're celebrating with your sweetheart, or maybe you want to get a little something for your best friend this Valentine's Day. Either way, if you want to buy a gift and you're not sure what to get, here are my top picks. For the sweet, chic, sarcastic and all-around awesome people in your life.

1. Leather watch (Nordstrom). This monochrome watch looks so sleek and cool. I know it's a man's watch, but I kind of want it for myself...

2. Greeting card (Forever 21). If you're not about spending a lot of money on Valentine's Day, a sweet little card like this one is a great way to show you care without breaking the bank. Or, if you're creative, a handmade card is even sweeter.

3. Travel bag (Owen and Fred). This travel bag is a constant reminder for your guy that you're thinking of him. Cute and functional — it's a win-win.

4. Copper Mug (Nordstrom). Even if you don't like Moscow Mules, these copper cups are the perfect addition to any kitchen/bar/bachelor pad.

5. Tote bag (Forever 21). One can never have too many cheeky totes, am I right?

6. Lipstick set (Sephora). This NARS lip pencil set is perfect for the lipstick-lover who likes trying new colors but doesn't want to commit to the full-price, full-size versions.

7. Monogram necklace (Urban Outfitters). A personalized gift like this one is perfect for Valentine's Day.

Will you be giving any Valentine's gifts this year? Do you usually, or do you have other traditions?

What's your pet peeve?

Adam and I went to see Foxcatcher on a Thursday night (you know, when my car died and I learned a valuable lesson). We went to an early show, and it was completely empty. We chose our seats in the middle (obviously) and waited for people to trickle in. The next couple after us walked up to our row and sat TWO SEATS DOWN FROM US. Two seats! Same row! In an empty theater! Isn't it a rule that you don't sit that close to people unless the theater is full?

They ended up deciding to go up a row, sitting right behind us and over a couple seats. And then they proceeded to talk to each other SO LOUDLY. During all the previews, they talked and talked, and immediately after the credits started rolling they started up again. They didn't speak during the movie (thank goodness, because I was about to flip. out.) — but still. They were just so loud! Adam and I were both getting annoyed, and he told me I should write about it. ("You should blog this," were his exact words, actually ;) But then I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea.

Talking through movies and TV — especially shows I haven't seen before — is one of my biggest pet peeves. Interrupting in general gets on my nerves more than almost anything, but also:
1. the incorrect use of "ironic"
2. people who get too personal with social media posts
3. having to repeat myself when someone isn't listening
4. loud talkers in public places
Now I'm putting it to the public: Are we alone in our annoyance with the too-close moviegoers? What are your biggest pet peeves? Anything unusual that most people might not think much about? I'd love to hear...

Highlights from Super Bowl Sunday

If you watched the game last night, you're probably talking about one of three things today:
1. The game-changing catch, followed by the game-saving interception, which led to the ultimate fighting. Oh, and Tom Brady's happy dance.
2. Katy Perry's amazing half-time show (or the confused shark).
3. The mostly tear-inducing commercials sprinkled in between.
All of them added up to a pretty entertaining show, I thought. But what you should really be talking about is Jimmy Fallon's lip sync battle with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. Did you see it last night? Adam and I both stayed up late to watch, and it was SO worth it. We were laughing so hard!

Will Ferrell started out by getting his Beyonce on, with a follow-up performance to "Adele Nazeem's" "Let It Go" — glitter included. Then Jimmy took it back with a Kelly Clarkson jam and a choreographed rendition of "Time of My Life" with (surprise!) Drew Barrymore. Kevin Hart slowed it down to serenade Will Ferrell with "All of Me," and then, because the half-time show wasn't nearly long enough, brought the crowd to its feet with "Roar."

Seriously, we could not even handle how funny these guys are together. Sorry, Patriots — Fallon was the real winner yesterday!
