Dining in Des Moines: Eatery A
In continuing with my reviews of new restaurants in Des Moines, today I'm talking about one of my new favorites: Eatery A. It's a Mediterranean restaurant that uses fire and smoke to bring out the flavors in all of the food. Adam and I went there for the first time for our anniversary dinner last month, and we both loved it.
We made reservations early in the day since it was Friday and we had heard it was really popular. It was a good thing we did because it was so busy that people were jammed in all around the bar waiting for tables. It's not very big, but they seated us in a separated dining area with only three booths, so we had some privacy quiet away from everyone else.
The wine list had a good range of expensive and affordable options, and I chose a California chardonnay that I really enjoyed.
We ordered chicken croquettes and a lasagna for appetizers, and we were almost too full for the pizza we ordered. Almost ;)
Eatery A is probably best known for the wood-fired pizzas, and they have a dozen options with some very fancy-pants ingredients. (To be honest, we had a hard time ordering one because we didn't even know what half the toppings were!) We ended up choosing one with tomato, mozzarella, basil and a balsamic reduction — it was fantastic.
Our waitress was really nice and helpful in describing the menu options and helping us make our decisions. The environment was dark and chic — a great place for a date, small party or even dinner with your parents. The prices are much more affordable than you'd think by looking at the decor and even the menu, which is another big plus in our books.
We haven't been back for a second time yet, but it's definitely on our to-do list. It's the type of place where you can get all dolled up and have a nice, slow evening of well-crafted food and drinks — and the perfect place to go when you haven't seen each other all week and need a night just to talk and catch up.
Have any of you been there yet? I'd love to hear what you thought :)
